Casey Smith Takes 2nd at Mobile International Speedway
“The car was better than it was the last time we were here,” said Casey. " We led the final practice session, and qualified second quick. We started on the front row, but when we came off turn four to take the green my shifter rod broke. That caused a huge pile up behind me. I tried to get in the middle of the track so cars could go to the outside or inside but all I saw in my mirror were cars wrecking. I feel bad about the equipment that got torn up, but it was out of my control.” Casey was able to enter the pits as the track was being cleaned and his team went to work replacing the broken shifter. Casey returned to the track before the green flag fell starting at the back of the pack. "I knew my car was really good on long runs and if we had a long green flag run, I would be able to get back up to the front." Smith was able to drive up to fifth place by lap 43, however again he was fighting gremlins, "I have no third gear" he radioed his team. Luckily another much needed yellow flag fell and he headed to the pits for repairs. Again starting at the back of the line, forcing him to race up through the field. “Mobile is really fast, and it is not very forgiving when we lost third gear and I had to come back to the pits on lap fifty I knew I was going to have to drive my hardest, I gave it all I had, and we ended up with a second place finish tonight." Casey said.
With the race at Mobile behind him, Smith now focuses on his next race, July 28th at South Alabama Speedway (Opp, Alabama) as part of the Viper Series.
