Casey Smith Crowned 2007 Mobile International Speedway Miller Lite Super Late Model Champion

(Austin, TX)  10/16/07 It was a weekend that brought two different emotions to Casey Smith who capped off a long weekend of racing far from his Austin, Texas home. Smith traveled to 5 Flags Speedway, Friday night in Pensacola, Florida to take part in the Blizzard Series season finale as a final preparation for the 40th Annual Snowball Derby that will take place the first weekend of December.  Casey continued to search for speed at the Florida panhandle track as he was only able to take his #99 Chevrolet to a sixteenth place finish.

In racing you take it a day at time and that’s exactly what Casey did as he traveled just sixty miles west to Mobile International Speedway for the season finale where he had a strangle hold on the championship point standings. Casey built over a 100 point lead over his nearest competitor going into Saturday night.

Casey left off right where he was the last time he was at Mobile International Speedway.  Casey captured the poll during qualifying which left his competitors guessing on what it would take to catch the young 22-year old racing veteran.  It would only be a few laps in before Casey would open a straightaway lead from the drop of the green flag until lap ninety-one of the one hundred lap event, which would be the end of a good thing for Casey.  A faulty transmission plug would put Casey out of the event early, resulting in a disappointing 9th place finish, but the big picture racing had paid off for Casey as he was crowned the 2007 Mobile International Speedway Miller-Lite Super Late Model Champion immediately after the event.

“To be honest with you I have mixed emotions right now, I am really excited to be crowned the champion but man we should have won that race.  That would have made for a much better celebration to have won both but I guess sometimes you can’t have your cake and eat it too.  It’s really great to win this championship.  Mobile is a place that has a lot of southern racing history to it, Charlie Bradberry won it last year, so that alone makes it a special one on my list of accomplishments.  I am looking forward to coming back to Alabama this week with another shot at hopefully winning another championship at South Alabama,” said Casey.

What Casey was referring to are his chances of taking home the hardware from another historic Alabama track, South Alabama Speedway in Opp, Alabama.  Casey currently holds a sixty-four point lead heading into this Sunday’s season finale of the track’s Super Late Model Viper Series.
