Casey Smith Headed to South Alabama Seeking “That One Win”
Austin, TX 3/2/09- The dominance of Casey Smith at South Alabama Speedway is a secret to no one. The twenty-two year old Texas native has made the long haul each race for the last two years winning both the 2007 and 2008 Viper series championships as well as multiple individual race wins at the 4/10 mile track along the way. However, there has been that one race and that one win that has eluded the team from total domination in their competitors’ eyes but yet total satisfaction in their own. That one race is the 43rd Annual Rattler 250.
“It tears at me all the time to know how good we always are at Opp (South Alabama Speedway) yet we’ve never been able to seal the deal when it comes to the Rattler. Going back to last season they put a bounty on us to anyone who could beat us, I mean that gives you an idea of how good we’ve been there,” stated Smith. “It would almost be a relief on myself to win the Rattler, it just has a ton of history and has had a lot of great drivers that have taken home the trophy and I have no doubt in my mind if we can get a little luck on our side come Sunday afternoon we should have a pretty good shot at it.”
Smith will have more than his fair share of work cut out for him as there are some forty plus paid entries entered for this year’s event and that’s a number that could grow by the day with a possible $20,000 prize on the line. With fifty or more cars in attendance, track owner/promoter John Dykes will pay $20,000 to win; if less than fifty cars show up at the event the winner’s check is cut in half still providing a nice payday to any racer.
“This year’s Rattler may be the biggest race this season. With the possible $20,000 payout it definitely got the extra attention John (Dykes) wanted. He is always willing to go out on limb and try something new and that’s something you don’t see too much anymore especially the way the economy is these days,” added Smith when discussing the possibility of winning the big check.
