Questions Will Be Answered Soon Enough for Casey Smith
Austin, TX 5/26/09- The first round of the newly named Gulf Coast Championships at Pensacola couldn’t have gone much better for Texas native Casey Smith but couldn’t have gotten much worse in terms of the ending result at Mobile. The new track record at Five Flags Speedway was a much needed high for the twenty four year old racer who has had his fair share of bad luck at the ultra abrasive half mile.
Since that time, many things have changed for the Texas based race team, most notably the fact they no longer own the pole winning race car and Hamner engine combination. A fellow racer in need of a quick Hamke race car contacted Smith and a deal was struck to sell the record breaking machine turn key. Just days later Casey put his order in for a new Hamke chassis which will unfortunately not be completed until mid June resulting in having to use his back up car at this weekend’s Memorial Day weekend double header.
While the car has been a part of the Casey Smith Racing stable for some time and is a piece Casey is familiar with, it still leaves many questions to be answered. With the success Smith has had over the last few seasons at Mobile and the struggles that have faced the team at Pensacola, one could wonder what type of race Smith will be a part of.
“Even though we sold the car that has been good to us for the last couple of years, I’m pretty confident we can pick up right where we left off. I don’t think we are going to go out there and win the pole at Five Flags again but we have found something setup wise that works for us at Pensacola and that’s something we can transfer to this car. And when it comes to Mobile, if we have half as good of a car as we’ve had there in the past and not get ran over or wrecked then we should be fine. That’s a track that just meshes well with my driving style,” stated Smith.
Race one of the Gulf Coast doubleheader will take place Friday May 22nd at 8pm at Pensacola, Florida’s Five Flags Speedway followed by an 8pm Saturday night shootout on May 23rd at Mobile, Alabama’s ultra fast half mile referred to as Mobile International Speedway.
