Casey Smith Has an Up and Down Weekend
Austin, TX 6/2/09- There were many questions that Casey Smith had for himself and his Texas based race team heading into the second round of the Gulf Coast championships this weekend. Last time out, Smith set the Five Flags Speedway track record but has since sold his record setting car and had to make the move to the car normally designated as his back up while a his new Hamke race car is being built.
Smith had no problem picking up where he left off at Pensacola bringing his #99 Rapid Disposal Chevy Impala home third. The third place finish could have easily turned into the winning position as Casey had a front row seat to the side by side, photo finish battle fellow competitors Augie Grill and eventual winner Bubba Pollard had. Multiple opportunities for the two to end in trouble never materialized but for Smith a third place finish at a track that hasn’t been kind to him in the past was like a win.
“This was huge for us and I thought we may have even lucked our way into a win because I thought Bubba and Augie were going to wreck each other. But regardless this was like a win for our team, we have struggled for the last couple of years here (Five Flags Speedway) so to be able to be in contention for the win feels pretty good,” stated Smith after the race.
The following night at Mobile Int’l Speedway the story couldn’t have been more opposite. After a tenth place qualifying effort Casey methodically made his way to the front after a lap thirty one spin. With the #99 machine in the second position and less than thirty laps remaining, mechanical gremlins struck the Texas based race team ending their night early after such a promising run.
