Austin,
TX 9/22/09- It
has been the type of season that would make even the most extreme roller
coaster enthusiast nauseous for Casey Smith, filled with ups and downs through
the duration of the 2009 Gulf Coast Championship season. This weekend marks the
final weekend of the ten race series in Pensacola and Mobile. It also marks the second weekend
for Smith’s new Hamke race car and is the last tune up at Five Flags Speedway
before December’s Snowball Derby.
In his last
race at the aforementioned Five Flag Speedway, Smith struggled home to a
thirteenth place finish in his new car. This weekend will mark just the second time
that Smith’s new Hamke race car has seen the asphalt at Five Flags Speedway. In
its first race at Mobile, Smith brought home the #99 Rapid
Disposal Chevy Impala in second after struggling through most of the race.
Smith’s season
has been full of ups and downs especially in the Gulf Coast segment of the season. During the doubleheader weekends Smith has run
well at both Pensacola and Mobile, however he has not been able to
have the luck to put together a weekend of solid finishes. In the first two gulf coast doubleheaders
Smith’s best finishes came at Five Flags Speedway, since then his best finishes
have come at Mobile International with a third and most recently a second place
finish in the last Gulf Coast race.
“We would
really love to finish this year off on a high note,” said Smith. “We pull all
the way from Texas which has made this season really
tough mentally, for the fact that we have not come up with a win yet this
year. It has been a frustrating year as
far as the Gulf Coast Championship goes.
Most weekends we have one good finish and one bad finish. It has been tough because in the first half
of the season we’d run great at Five Flags and then have a bad night in Mobile.
The past couple of weekends we’ve had a good night in Mobile but not in Pensacola.
This is our fifth weekend doubleheader so hopefully we’ll have a great
night at both and sweep the weekend. We
have run good enough to win at both tracks this year; we just haven’t actually
won yet.”
This weekend’s race at Five Flags
Speedway has some added significance to it as it is the last tune up for the
forty-second annual Snowball Derby in December.
“This Friday’s race in Pensacola is really important to us just for the simple fact that it’s
the last time we will see Five Flags until December. We want to run well there this weekend and we
also want to make sure that we have our best setup in our new car when we go
down there in December for the Derby,”
stated Smith.
Smith is looking for his first win of
2009, if he can get just a little bit of luck to go his way this weekend, he
just might have two wins by Sunday.
