Austin, TX 10/20/09- One would have to look all the way back to March 8th of this year to see the last time Casey Smith competed at the South Alabama Speedway so when a 100 lap super late model race came up on the schedule as part of the track’s Alabama 200 weekend, Smith was all over it. Just as he had done many times in 2008 on his way to becoming the Viper series champion, Casey Smith put on an impressive performance for the fans of the South Alabama Speedway, scoring his first win of the 2009 season.

“There’s nothing like a win especially back here at South Alabama Speedway,” stated Smith in victory lane. “We had an awesome car at the beginning, which let us get to the front pretty quickly. Then we opened up a straightaway lead over Augie (Grill) and then my car started to get a little tight which let him catch us and get back around us, but he decided to spin the lap car and instead of passing them which cost him the race really. That let me cool my tires down and when we went back green we just checked out because I knew we only had seven laps to go.”

Casey took the lead just twenty-one laps into the event and would eventually open up a straightaway lead over the second place car of Augie Grill. A long green flag run saw Casey’s car go a bit tight over time allowing Grill to chase him down after he made adjustments on the previous caution. The lap car of David Hodge held up Smith allowing Grill to get around Casey for the top spot with just twenty to go.

As Casey was quickly closing the gap, Grill showed his lack of patience when leading with just seven laps to go and spun the lap car of Tuffy Hester which would bring out the yellow. With the appropriate call to send Grill to the rear of the field for rough driving the lead was handed to Smith who drove away for the win, his first of the year.

Next up for the Austin, Texas based Casey Smith Racing team will be the $10,000 to win 27th Annual All-American weekend at the Nashville Fairground Speedway on Sunday November 1st. Casey will compete in the 250 lap super late model portion of the event with the hope of making it two wins in a row.
