Anyone ever associated with the sport of stock car
racing knows that the people you get to know over the years and the
people you meet throughout your racing career make up what many often refer to
as “the racing world.” Well for Casey Smith when his long time friend and
competitor in the racing world, NASCAR driver
Reed Sorenson, asked him if would be have any interest in racing his legends
car this summer his response was nothing less than, “sure.”
The two will now come together after decades of competing against each other
going back to the quarter midget days when the two were both five years old.
The two both then moved into the legend cars divisions, racing around the
country before eventually making the move to super late models with both
competing in the ASA National tour. Eventually the two would go their separate
ways in the racing world with Casey competing in major super late model events,
as he still does today, while Reed would ride the NASCAR rollercoaster into the
Sprint Cup and Nationwide series where he still
competes in a majority of the races. Regardless of which direction the two
went, they stayed in touch over the years.
That friendship will now blossom to an owner and driver relationship, at least
for a couple of races this season, when Casey will pilot Sorenson’s legend car
in a few select Summer Shootout series races at the Charlotte
Motor Speedway in preparation for the Legends Million race July 15-17. The event will pay $250,000 to the winner
and $10,000 just to start the feature. With over five hundred cars expected for
the event Casey realizes the tall task at hand.
“It’s going to be a tough race to make. There’s no question about that,
especially around that track. It’s flat and hard to pass so you will need some
luck on your side for sure. At the end of the day though, the way I see it, we
are a couple of former legend car champions having some racing fun together. It
would be cool if any NASCAR driver asked you to drive for him but when it’s a
fierce competitor you competed against over half your life it makes it pretty
cool,” said Smith. “It’s really going to bring back memories the first time I
hit the track that’s for sure. I have not been back in a legend car since I won
the National Pro Championship race at
The first race for the newly formed legend car super team will be round one of
the Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway this
